Algebra Lessons
In maths this week the children have been learning how to read and write addition and subtraction equations. The algebra focus has been on helping the students to understand that equals (=) means “is equal to” or “has the same value as”, rather than being a sign that indicates “the answer”.
They have been playing the Same Name Game in class, so your child will be able to show you how to play. It would be helpful if you can use the phrases “is equal to” or “is the same as”, as you play the game together.

Harvest Table
Matariki is a time
to celebrate the bounties of the
earth. We do this collectively by contributing to the
harvest table. Whanau and tamariki are
invited to put onto the table preserves, flower and vegetable seeds, seedlings,
autumn leaves, grains or legumes they will be using over the cold winter months
to boost their soups, stews and cereals.
Contribute spices, things you have grown, honey, recipes and anything
that reminds us of Autumn.

This is an ideal
opportunity to introduce tamariki to the different kinds of treasures that are
in abundance around us. Encourage
tamariki to feel the different textures, smell the different spices, and try
other grains, fruit and vegetables. Above
all – encourage the nurturing essence the table brings, the sharing and giving
of one’s labour.
The hands that toil
in the soil of Papatuanuku are connected and focused, and from this small deed
of giving grows kindness and love and the anticipation of what they will bring
to the table next year.
Our Harvest Table
will be in the foyer of the school office from next week. Each time you put something on the table
please take a hauhake card from the basket.
Hauhake is the Maori meaning for harvest. We will avoid tinned food this year and aim
to build a seed bank and have the tamariki grow produce for next year’s harvest
table.
